It is at this time of year when we begin to plan the next 12 months, change things up, set fitness/lifestyle goals and make that all important bucket list!

But at this time of year when it’s hooning rain, it’s cold and predominantly dark, finding the motivation to stick to getting outside can become challenging. We are here to help you set goals that stick so you can not just achieve them, but enjoy the journey too!

Setting yourself a fitness goal

You may have already heard of the SMART goal idea. It is a framework around which to build and stick to a concrete goal. It goes as follows:

S – Specific – a goal that anyone can understand, including you, it needs to be clear and concise.

M – Measurable – your goal may have measurements such as distance cycled or kilograms of weight lost, but measurements can also be useful in determining progress along the way too.

A – Achievable – there’s no problem in reaching for the stars, but set yourself up for success as this can be pivotal in your success. Seeking advice from others who have achieved your goal already can help.

R – Relevant – Is your goal relevant to where you are now and the timescale you’ve set?

T – Time bound – have a specific date (and time!) you’re going to achieve your goal.

But what’s the final ‘A’ stand for?

Ah but you ask, what is the final ‘A’ on the image above? Well, I would argue the final very powerful ‘A’ on this list is essential if you’re to stick to achieving your goal…

A in this case is for accountability.

A – Accountability – telling others about your goal can be extremely powerful. This could be posting on your social media, emailing your colleagues, or simply telling a few of your closest friends. You could even keep people informed of your progress along the way. Sharing positive goals with others works in many ways, it motivates you but who know, it could also motivate and inspire others to do something similar in the future.

So what now?

Now is the time to get yourself ready for an amazing 2023, to lock in dates and to create habits that stick. Go big, reach for the stars and make it a year to remember.
